Prep works starts on New Tampa bridge project

Tree removal is under way from New Tampa Boulevard to Interstate 75, clearing a path for construction of a long-planned bridge project to link Tampa Palms and West Meadows.

Construction crews began chopping down trees and clearing weeds and brush June 20 to make way for the New Tampa Boulevard extension and bridge.

Tampa transportation director Jean Dorzback confirmed Thursday that work had begun and her staff had recently held its first pre-construction meeting.

When completed in two years, the span over I-75 will provide an alternate north-south route to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard through New Tampa. However, the bridge will not offer direct access to the interstate.

Work on the I-75 overpass project will coincide with the eight-lane widening of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard from Palm Springs Boulevard to Pebble Creek Drive. That stretch of the Bruce B. Downs widening, conducted by Hillsborough County, is expected to be completed by fall 2012.

In April, the Tampa City Council awarded Tampa-based Prince Contracting a $12.4 million contract to build a 0.7-mile New Tampa Boulevard road extension and bridge.

Kisinger Campo and Associates designed the $14 million investment, which is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2013.

The new bridge will link New Tampa and Commerce Park boulevards near Freedom High. Both streets currently dead-end near I-75.

The bridge will be built wide enough to carry up to four lanes of traffic, but striped as a two-lane road.

The span's decorative design will include black vinyl fencing, planters, sidewalks, a bike path, lighting, storm sewer drainage and landscaping.

The extended road on both sides of the bridge will feature a 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side and an 8-foot-wide multiuse trail on the north.

The walking and bike paths will allow users a way to cross I-75 without having to access busy Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, Tampa spokeswoman Annette Spina said in a news statement.

The city plans to erect traffic signals near the high school in Tampa Palms and at New Tampa Boulevard and Wood Sage Drive in West Meadows to control the expected increased traffic.

Despite legal challenges, the city won county approval early this year to build the new bridge and road extension.
