Review: 'Little Shop' a quirky delight
Shreveport Little Theatres Lagniappe series first offering of Little Shop of Horrors, which opened Thursday night, was a quirky delight from sizzling start to big finish. This slick, rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman tells the story of a reclusive florist who finds himself raising an alien, blood-thirsty plant. Weird story, yes, but weave in cleverly macabre lyrics and dialogue, provide great acting and singing, add the tender touches of a love story and you have a wonderful show.Director Laura Beemans focus on blocking and choreography kept this show moving at a fast pace. Musical director William Parsons did an excellent job of shaping the music and vocals. Together they assembled an impressive array of vocal and acting talents for this show. Each and every cast member was a stand-out as they tackled the complex vocals and the machine-gun lyrics that have made this show such a crowd pleaser. Adam Philley (Seymour) had a marvelous voice and gave a believable, sometimes poignant, performance as the nerdy florist. Anna Maria Sparke-Keele (Audrey) shined as Seymours love interest. She brought energy to her role and showed a wide range of vocal execution. Nate Wasson (Mr. Mushnik) also had great range and shared a campy musical number with Philley that was delightfully funny. Jabari Thomas (Orin) was impressive with his energetic use of exaggerated expressions and gestures to characterize the demented dentist. The vocal trio of Troquel Riley, Carolyn Bryant and Kaylah Williams belted out song after song to keep the show moving and bridge the action. Mike Martindale provided the rich, powerful voice of the plant to round out this capable and entertaining cast.
The musical sound track and on-stage vocals were well blended by the audio crew. Although the plants voice was a bit muddled at first, they fixed the problem and the rest of the musical numbers were crisp and clear. The show was complemented by clever technical effects, a dynamic lighting design and the plants animation by puppeteers.
This show was well staged and expertly executed by an enthusiastic cast. This Little bit of Lagniappe dished up a big serving of entertainment.
