The Central Dauphin East High School graduation on Wednesday night turned into a family affair for a Swatara Township family.

David, Jacob and Zachary Zellers, fraternal triplets from Rutherford, were among the 350 Central Dauphin East graduates who received their diplomas at the Giant Center in Derry Township.

The 18-year-old triplets, all honor students, have been “a delight to teach,” said Jason Woodall, a Central Dauphin East math teacher who has taught all three.

“They’re great kids,” Woodall said. “They are friendly, have a good work ethic, express themselves well and are popular with the other students. They’re all talented at math. I’ll miss them.”

The triplets were born 10 weeks early, then spent several weeks in the Harrisburg Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They spent their school days in Central Dauphin School District, first at Rutherford Elementary, then East Middle School and finally at Central Dauphin East High School.

They’re not identical in any sense of the word.

David, the oldest by one minute, is the leader, said his mother, Mindy Zellers. She said Jacob “marches to the beat of his own drum” and has a great sense of humor while Zachary is competitive.

The three said they get along well.

“Jake and I are in the band together,” David said. “He plays guitar while I play drums. Both of us work in food and beverages at Hersheypark in the summer. Zach and I work out and do athletic stuff together.”

Jacob said he loves music. He set up a concert with two bands and two rap groups in his high school auditorium on May 28 for his senior project. He also snowboards and skis and was vice president of the school ski club this year.

“It’s cool to be in school with my two brothers,” he said. “Not a lot of people get to experience that. But we don’t have a lot of classes together. I think the school split us up.

Zachary, the youngest by two minutes, says he’s a little quieter than his brothers.

“I’m the youngest, but I’m the biggest,” he said. He played varsity football at Central Dauphin East for two years, then had a career-ending knee injury.

“We look like brothers, but we’re not identical,” he said.
