Pre-teen to compete in state pageant

The typical girl spends her 11th birthday with family and friends, eating cake and opening gifts.

Jayde Miller of Crawfordsville will spend hers preparing to compete for a state pageant title.

Jayde was chosen as a state finalist for this year’s National American Miss Indiana Pageant. She will participate in the pre-teen division of the contest, which will take place at Indianapolis  June 30 — the day after she turns 11.

The National American Miss system is based in Houston, Texas. State pageants are conducted throughout the year, and a national competition for state winners takes place in Florida each November. Contestants are scored in four areas: formal wear (30 percent), personal introduction

(30 percent), interview

(30 percent) and community involvement (10 percent). There are optional contests such as talent, photogenic and casual wear modeling (optional contests are judged separately and have no bearing on the final outcome of the pageant).

This will be Jayde’s first foray into pageant competition, and she admitted she is a little nervous.

“I’m not used to being in front of a lot of people,” she said.

The NAMISS Pageant has a formal wear portion. Jayde chose a shimmering gold gown.

“It had to be formal; full length down to the floor,” Jayde said. “I’ve never worn a formal gown before, but the first time I saw it, I knew it was  the one I wanted. I said, ‘That’s it ... that’s my dress.’”

Jayde’s mother Peg described the dress as “Very Jayde ... kind of

elegant.”

Aside from the necessary shopping, Peg has been helping her daughter get ready for the pageant in many other ways.

“My mom has been helping me a lot,” Jayde said. “I’ve been trying on my dress and working on walking.”

The mother and daughter also attended a NAMISS informational meeting at Lafayette. Peg, who worked at a hotel and saw many pageants there, admitted she wasn’t sure about NAMISS when Jayde first expressed an interest.

“I worked at the Hilton in Indianapolis, and we had pageants come in all the time,” she said. “I really didn’t have a good impression of them.”

Jayde and Peg did some research into NAMISS, and Peg was impressed.

“I liked the way it was presented ... that it was supposed to be fun for the girls,” she said.

NAMISS stresses age appropriateness, which Peg appreciated.

“The pre-teens aren’t supposed to wear makeup,” she said.
