Dangerous criminal's Con Air flights are costing Australian millions
In the past month alone, two dangerous detainees - including Belgian-born Christophe Michel Munster - have flown overseas on charter flights costing $550,000.
And as the cost of Australia's detention facilities continue to soar, the number of "involuntary removals" by immigration officials is expected to reach 100 in 2010/11.
The Daily Telegraph obtained details of special chartered flights used to ferry dangerous criminals and immigration over-stayers back to their home countries.
Munster, wanted in Europe on sex, weapons and drugs charges, was given the Hollywood treatment when he flew on a Gulfstream 4 private jet to Belgium last month.
Nine commercial airlines, including Qantas, refused to fly the 33-year-old, who was arrested in the northern NSW town of Byron Bay after eight months on the run.
Syrian national Ziad Awad was also flown on a special charter flight last month after he turned violent on a commercial flight to Bangkok.
Awad was initially removed from a commercial flight leaving Sydney after becoming violent and abusing airline staff and passengers. He was then deported the next day but his appalling behaviour meant the airline refused to fly him to Damascus.
That left immigration authorities with no choice but to charter a plane to fly Awad to his homeland. With half a dozen security in tow, the cost of Awad's charter is already close to $250,000 and the bills are still coming in.
Last September, Patricia Toia - described as a "human crime wave" - was flown to New Zealand on a
charter after Qantas and other airlines said they were unwilling to have the violent criminal on their planes.
Toia, who committed dozens of crimes across Sydney and was jailed 30 times, had to be restrained as she was transferred from Villawood Detention Facility to the airport.
At least eight chartered flights have been used in the past few years.
On one occasion - in February 2010 - taxpayers picked up a bill of about $100,000 to fly 76 people back to Malaysia and Indonesia. They were tracked down by Immigration officials in the Victorian town of Mooroopna and found to be illegal workers.
Each year, about 100 people are deported after refusing to leave voluntarily. The average costs are about $10,000 for each deportee, although this soars when a chartered aircraft is used.
An Immigration Department spokesman said: "We are not able to discuss our clients' details as this would breach their privacy.
