Harriers are perfect hosts
Haywards Heath Harriers hosted their Mid Summer relays at Whitemans Green last week and provided the winning team.
The event invites local teams of four each to cover the grassy lap of one and a quarter miles. A total of 18 entered and the fastest finishers were Harriers own men of Tom Mullen, Mark McLoughlin, Phil Radford and Russ Mullen.
They produced a highly impressive team time of 26.16, while Radford also ran the fastest lap of the evening as he clocked in at 6.14.
Burgess Hill Runners took the ladies prize in 31.31; Jo Bryce running the fastest lap overall in 7.22.
Harriers’ junior boys, comprising Alex Whitton, Sam Blackwell, Thomas Easley and Myles Rice, won their category in 32.35, with Rice running the fastest junior lap in 7.11.
There was also a win for Harriers girls Neave Scott, Flora Lonie, Ciara Brannigan and Brittany Croydon-Kempster in 32.58. Brittany ran 7.48 for the junior girls medal.
It was personal bests all round for Harriers at the weekly Hove Park 5k Run. U19 Phil Radford evidenced his speed again, running 17.37 for his first time at the event.
Russ Mullen was close up with 17.47 and Tom Mullen is feeling ambitious after his 18.23. Mark Sykes followed in 22.36, then Michael Essex in 23.20, John Abson 29.30, Janice Abson 32.46 and U14 Josh Essex rounded up the score of PBs with 34.19.
Two Harriers travelled west for the 20th Torbay Half Marathon, a two-lap course starting and ending on Paignton sea front. Mark Armitage finished in 1.40.53 (chip), a good 354th out of over 1,500 runners, and Steve Horn was pleased to make the trip with 1.56.52 to finish 845th.
Proving their legs are made not only for running, Harriers Andrew Biggs and son Edward made it a Fathers Day to remember by completing the London to Brighton Bike Ride in 4 hours 49 minutes.
The 14-year-old Edward was one of the first young cyclists to finish the 54-mile ride and was particularly pleased to conquer Ditchling Beacon in one impressive swoop, with no stops.
