The response was overwhelming: Within six days, Wong and his team had surpassed their $25,000 goal thanks to pledges from more than 300 donors.

Most of the pledges were under $100, but Xi Huang gave $2,500 — the largest contribution. A medical researcher who lives in Brooklyn, he said he read about the project on a Mandarin-language website and decided to help. “One day I’ll tell my kids, ‘Look this is something your dad helped to build,’” he said. Xi is also a private pilot, and he said he couldn’t shake the image of flying over the city and seeing a cross-shaped pool floating offshore.

The money, Wong says, will be used to bring the +Pool concept into the real world on a very small scale. For the project to work, the designers need to create a filtration system that make East River water a comfortable fit for swimmers. Wong, a 31-year-old architect at Family New York, runs the project with Archie Lee Coates and Jeffery Franklin, both 27 and employees at the design firm PlayLab.
