Bear Creek graduate finds rock voice in Nashville

An audible rainstorm - with tornado-ish tendencies - was seriously pelting Daniel Ryan Copher's truck as he spoke from Nashville, Tenn.

Stockton, his niece, his best friend, the San Joaquin County Fair - dry, warm California weather, too - definitely were on his mind.

"Hey, what's going on out there?" Copher said, alarmed about the infamous - also inaccurate - Forbes magazine "misery"-index dissing of his hometown. "Hey, I know a lot of happy people in Stockton. I miss my home all the time. Home is where the roots are. I'll always have love for my hometown."

Copher, 34, a 1995 Bear Creek High School graduate and one-time competitive snowboarder, is in Nashville doing what he never wanted to do. He's pursuing a music career, including today's release of "Souls on Shoes," his first Music City-produced CD.

Performing and recording as "D. Ryan," Copher - who writes, sings and plays guitar - introduced the 10-track CD at Nashville's 12th & Porter club on Saturday. Now, he wants to take off on a George Thorogood-style tour: 50 shows in 50 cities in 50 days. He hopes Stockton makes the itinerary.

Despite the glib Nashville stereotype, "Souls on Shoes" isn't a country-music album. It's melodic, energetic pop-rock driven by Copher's soul-stained voice - frequently erupting with raw emotion, sometimes hinting at his rap-rock past - and edgy, fiery guitars.

"I kept my style real on this project," he said.

He also retained faith in his Nashville Theory.

"I wanted to see if I was that good," said Copher, revealing an upbeat personality and slightly southern twang during a recent phone conversation. "I figured if there's anywhere I could make it, I could make it in Nashville. It's a country-music city and won't have anything like me. It'd be easy to make a name for myself."

After "starving on $15 a week for food," hanging drywall - he learned that trade working for his dad's Stockton business - and getting a "crash course" in music-industry duplicity, he remained resolute.

"That taught me a lot about Nashville," Copher said, referring to a recording deal that flopped. "I'll tell you, this is a city. Not just a musical style. Just because you live in Nashville doesn't make you country. I'm from the 209. I'm the first person to say that I'm not from Nashville. This is a great place to do music, though.
