Miss Flagler County Scholarship pageants roll out Sunday
While Bert Parks won't be there, royalty will be crowned Sunday night.
The annual Miss Flagler County Scholarship pageants will take place beginning at 3 p.m. at Flagler Auditorium on State Road 100 adjacent to Flagler Palm Coast High School.
The Miss Flagler County competition is a preliminary to the Miss Florida USA pageant and eight girls between the ages of 16 and 23 will be competing this year, according to Elizabeth McLaughlin, one of the pageant organizers along with Z Wave Surf Shop owner Zoee Forehand. Z Wave is the primary sponsor of the event.
"We have a great turnout of girls," McLaughlin said.
Thirty-five girls have entered the youngest age division for the title of Little Miss Flagler County and 12 girls will compete in the Miss Junior Flagler County contest.
McLaughlin said the turnout for the youngest age division is larger than they've had in the past few years.
The pageant, which used to be part of the Fourth of July festivities in Flagler Beach, is now held at the Flagler Auditorium.
"It's really nice (at the auditorium)," McLaughlin said. "We're fortunate to be in the air conditioning and the audience has comfortable seats to sit in."
Contestants also seem to like the venue as well.
"All the girls have two dressing rooms and a make-up room where before we used to have to cram into the (Flagler Beach) commission room," McLaughlin said.
Holding the pageant at the auditorium -- with its state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems -- also allows pageant organizers to do more with the event.
"Actually having it at the auditorium has enabled us to do an opening number for the Miss Flagler County pageant," McLaughlin said. "It makes it more of a show. It's more entertaining and more exciting."
McLaughlin said the facility also allows the reigning Miss Flagler County to present a slide show of all the events she attended during her reign.
"We weren't able to do that being outside," she said.
McLaughlin said support from local businesses -- each contestant is sponsored by a Flagler County business -- has been good.
"It's really nice to know that they support the pageant and they're willing to write a check," she said.
All of the money from sponsorships is used to buy savings bonds, which are given as prizes after the contest.
The Little Miss Flagler pageant begins at 3 p.m., with the Miss Junior Flagler County contest following at 5. The Miss Flagler County event starts at 7 p.m. Entry for the Miss Flagler County pageant requires a separate ticket from the earlier programs.
