Harborne doc proves he is a man of iron in world's longest triathalon

SUPER-FIT medic Dr Guy Evans proved he’s a real spin doctor after cycling, running and swimming his way through the world’s longest triathlon.

Guy, from Harborne, swapped operating on casualties in Birmingham carry out a military style operation to get through the gruelling Ironman contest in Switzerland.

The tough doc, who works at A&Es at Winson Green’s City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital, in West Bromwich, endured a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2mile-marathon to raise £3,000 to help children in the slums of an African city.

The 27-year-old is supporting a small charity, the Kibera Project, which gives education and sporting facilities in the poorest areas of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

Guy, who watched Ironman competitions on television as a child, crossed the finish line after ten hours and ten minutes on July 10.

“The Ironman is the ultimate one-day endurance challenge and you have to complete it in 16 hours or less, so I was quite pleased with my time,” said Guy.

“The toughest part was when I was about 18 miles into the marathon, it was so tempting to stop. It only became a little bit easier at the 20-mile marker.

“The best part was running into Zurich at the end. There were steel bands and DJs playing and people in fancy dress cheering.

“It was an absolutely unforgettable day whose low points were far exceeded by the high of finishing with a smile on my face, supported by my amazing family.

“Another high point was having a beer when it was all over!”

Guy’s quick time ranked him 145th out of more than 2,000 competitors.

It could mean he was won a qualifying place for the International Triathlon Union World Championships in America in November. Guy works for Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust while also studying for a Masters Degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

He is still collecting donations for the Kibera Project as he is short of his £3,000 target.

I too haa the honour to work with him for many years. All the overseas detachments we went, the good and bad times in the ops units, during exercises, social gatherings. Yes, we were a well knitted bunch of 'spiders'. I can't believe why some of our locals are so insensitive and writing rubbish and making a joke out of this in other forums. I never knew morons still exists in Spore given our so-called 'educated' system and 3G shit! Is this our next gen of citizens?
