My Windows 7 folder takes up a lot of space. How can I delete it?

PJ Wall

A Among other things, this folder is used to store Restore Points – the files created by Windows’ System Restore utility. Depending on how System Restore is set up, the System Volume Information folder can quickly grow to a large size.

Deleting it would be a very bad idea because the information in this folder has tentacles that hook into the operating system in numerous ways that aren’t easily extricated, so it is perhaps fortunate that Windows’ efforts have thus far prevented you from doing so.

However, there are a couple of safer ways to reclaim the space. First, System Restore can be disabled or reined in. To do this, click Start followed by Control Panel, System and Security and then System.

Now click the System protection link on the left-hand side followed by the System Protection tab. Click the Configure button. To disable System Restore, click to select the ‘Turn off system protection’ radio button.

Alternatively, to reduce the disk space used by the tool, move the Max Usage slider control below to the left. Then click OK.

Instead, if you need to reclaim some space temporarily, launch Windows Explorer (press the Windows key and E) then right-click the hard disk (usually C:) and choose Properties.

Select the General tab and click the Disk Cleanup button. On the Disk Cleanup dialogue box, click the More Options tab and click the Clean up button in the System Restore and Shadow Copies section: this will erase all but the most recent Restore Point, freeing up a large chunk of disk space.
