I found this dispatch, at the notable SciDec.net non-profit news outlet, while scanning along looking for something else:
Semiu Babalola : Africa releases first survey of its own science ;
The report’s main message is that, if anything, budgets for science are falling in the very countries that need it the most. It’s a wide trend, one suspects, so why would one expect Africa to be different? Worthwhile context for this news story are accompanying links to other stories on the same general topic – including this one by David Dickson on the high hope that such surveys will spur more investment in science by the continents’s governments.

NatureNews: One reporter, double news on a little, frozen, geysering moon June 1st, 2011Art by Michael Carroll - http://tinyurl.com/3bzjxed
A lot of science writers even some who write largely on medical or biological sciences, I venture, are in the biz due in some degree to science fiction. That’s not as writers of it, but as readers of it. It just goes with the personality types drawn to science journalism – a fair share of such folks read, or did read, sci fi.
Richard C. “Rick” Lovett is a rarer kind who writes both science journalism and science fiction. And never mind that the “science” part of science fiction often means nothing but that it’s regular fiction at different times or on different worlds without much science but maybe a lot of magic involved. He writes a lot for the genre’s bedrock magazine, Analog , in both modes and recently won a prize there for one of his novellas, “Phantom Sense.” He’s a regular at the sci j tracker for his articles at Nat’l Geographic, Nature, and elsewhere. So it’s easy to think he could eke some fiction out of two recent dispatches he’s written on the geysers of Enceladus – the little moon of Saturn that has feathers – actually, plumes of icy particles -! protruding from its bottom.
