Doing nice things for others is art

Although addressed to a particular person, thousands of people potentially saw the ad. Such are Jennifer Bélanger's magic moments of art.
The Moncton printmaker and contemporary artist/curator placed the ad in advance of her solo exhibition Song and Dance, opening Friday at Galerie Sans Nom in Moncton. Although the classified ad was a legitimate attempt to return the album, it also says much about Bélanger's practice.
Bélanger is fascinated by the everyday. She wants to reframe daily life "through intention, context and awareness." She finds magic in the unannounced, in the chance occurrences, and uses words like subtle, intimate and playful to describe her work. She desires "a silent tête-à-tête conversation with the observer."
If Monctonians aren't familiar with Bélanger's ideas, they will be soon. Along with her show at Galerie Sans Nom, she has curated Building Clouds: Six Contemporary Printmakers at the Galerie d'art Louise et Reuben-Cohen. As a satellite component for her solo exhibition, she has also rented a billboard in Dieppe and put on it a photograph of herself before her first day of school with text reading: Her mom would secretly follow her to the corner store.
For Song and Dance, Bélanger has created a faux-vintage 'Dad's den' - complete with wood paneling, a wood-encased tube TV, rug and La-Z-Boy. Her work will hang innocuously on the walls of the den.
Her new work combines screen prints into found vintage photo frames complete with the original stock images. Removing the original paper with the brand name and size of the frame, she has put in her own often dark, creepy and sarcastic text-based interpretations of the images.
One piece, with a montage of a girl from infancy to childhood, reads: "After a meal at a restaurant she would sometimes unwrap the candy, roll it around in her mouth a couple of times, carefully rewrap it and leave it on the table."
The work was inspired by a baby album, for a mysterious Melissa, Bélanger found on Cameron Street in Moncton a few years ago. It was in pristine condition on top of a pile of garbage alongside a table with broken legs. Bélanger doesn't usually root through garbage, but the book was yellow and she's drawn towards everything yellow. Stunned, she salvaged the book and brought it home.
