With this app, kids can do magic with the swish and flick of the hand, just like Harry Potter. The app starts off by inviting you to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Once you accept, you go to Ollivanders Wand Shop to let your perfect wand choose you. Next you try on the famous Sorting Hat to be placed into one of the four Houses of Hogwarts. Then it is on to spell practice and eventually dueling. Spells can be performed in one of two ways: by drawing patterns on the screen with your finger or by placing the device flat in your hand and putting one finger on the screen while physically performing the motion of the spell.

Cleverly, the app requires you to learn the spell by practicing it before you can unlock it for use in dueling. Dueling can be done alone within the app, taking on an opponent that the app creates for you after you select from three levels of difficulty. Or you can duel a fellow "classmate" in real time who is using another iDevice over Bluetooth. Or go online to find an opponent. Each spell has its own special effect, and you can use both offensive and defensive spells. Winning a duel earns points for your House. The app comes with 17 spells, but six more powerful ones will cost you extra money. Before purchasing this version, you can try a free version that offers seven spells.

The best of the Harry Potter apps, this is a game in which you control the blocky, Lego version of Harry Potter as he plays his way through the most important scenes found in the first four J. K. Rowling books. You can also become Ron, Hermione or more than 100 others as you platform-puzzle your way through the stunning 40 levels of magical mischief. There are problems to solve, wizards to meet and mounds of things to collect. But best of all, the whole experience is infused with tongue-in-cheek humor, which is the hallmark of LEGO video games.
