Formaldehyde Added to Cancer List
A chemical used in a wide range of consumer products is now on the government's list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer. The National Toxicology Program added formaldehyde and seven other common chemicals to its official Report on Carcinogens . Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable chemical used in plastics, pressed wood products, hair straighteners, nail polishes and synthetic fibers. It was upgraded to a "known carcinogen" after it was found to cause nasal cancer in rats. Right now, formaldehyde is not listed on the labels of most products. Experts say this announcement may prompt companies who do not use formaldehyde to start labeling their products as "formaldehyde free".
Six other commonly used products were listed as "reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens" including styrene, a chemical found in fiberglass and styrofoam products like white foam coffee cups and takeout containers. People are also exposed to the synthetic chemical by breathing indoor air that has styrene vapors from tobacco smoke or building materials.
The report notes that a listing on the Report on Carcinogens does not by itself mean the substance will cause cancer. Many factors are involved including the amount of exposure and an individual's susceptibility to disease. For several of the substances in the report, the risk comes from their uses in industry, not personal use. The associate director of the National Toxicology Program says the purpose of the list is to give people information to allow them to make choices. John Bucher says the report underscores the critical connection between our nation's health and what's in our environment.
