Vacationing With A Pet? Some Tips From a Vet

Perhaps you are traveling across borders with your pets this August?

Dr. James Isaacs , a San Fernando Valley veterinarian with clients from Burbank to West Hills, from Studio City to Calabasas, and with experience as a pet specialist on network television and radio, offers his experience and wisdom about caring and preparing for pets who may be traveling this summer.

Perhaps you are planning to go down to San Diego, or you might be planning to go to Great Britain. Either way, this interview with Dr. James Issacs will help you think through the best moves to make, when to make them, making the trip better for you and for Fido (or FiFi, or Frenchy, or KitCat). PATCH: Why should a pet owner's first stop (prior to completing travel preparations) be a veterinarian's office? I would think it would be a psychotherapist's office to prepare for possible family reunions.

DR. ISAACS: A health check is critical before traveling.  It ensures your pet is healthy, current on vaccines and any laboratory tests such as heartworm test, fecal parasite check, and general health panels. 

PATCH: What paperwork or red tape should I consider before traveling with Fido?

DR. ISAACS: If you are crossing state or international borders, your pet will need an official interstate/international health certificate. 

PATCH: Seriously? International borders I can believe, but I need a health certificate to drive to Vegas? In The Hangover they drove around with a lion and no hassles by the man.

DR. ISAACS: But there was no escaping Mike Tyson.

PATCH: What places are a big concern?

DR. ISAACS: If you are travelling to Australia, Hawaii, the British Isles, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, or certain countries in Africa, you will need to have laboratory testing to demonstrate your pet is effectively immunized against rabies.  Be sure to ask your veterinarian if there are any diseases your pet could encounter at your destination that are not present where you live. 

PATCH: Aren't there breed considerations, careful protocol, and numerous requirements for taking a dog to England, even though the 6 month quarantine was lifted back in 2002?

DR. ISAACS: Yes, there are specifics for every foreign country worth noting and accomodating with time and planning. A helpful site is  dogfriendly.com .
