Local woman challenges trail

ZEBULON - Until this summer, Kathy Cockrell did not consider completing a marathon trek through the mountains. The closest she came was a six mile hike to Raven Rock in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in western North Carolina. The avid hiker was walking long distances in some form or fashion for the past six years as a member of the TriangleTrailblazers, and part of a group of William B. Umstead State Park hike "so informal that we do not even have a name," said Cockrell. Earlier this year, Leah Bartlett, director of regional development for the CureSearch Childhood Cancer, contacted the group Umstead.Ultimate Hikes CureSearch sponsors to raise money for cancer research for children, and Bartlett hopes to organize a group ride from Raleigh and Durham. Cockrell attended an information meeting at one of the REI stores in the Triangle in July. "It was a good presentation. They did a good job of making us all pumped, "said Cockrell. She signed the commitment of his $ 100 check on the spot. Cockrell and met other hikers walking their coaches: one from REI, the other of Joe Miller, former editor for Outside News & Observer. They received information on October 1 hike, which covers part of the Appalachian Trail. The walk itself is 28.3 miles through mountainous terrain in the North and South Carolina. "Yeah, it's a little crazy," said Cockrell of its commitment to the promenade. Cockrell has to its credit some 20-mile hikes with the group Umstead, following a calendar year. Hikers on average 10 miles by hiking through the summer months, finally on their way to a 20 mile trek in February. "The first time I did 17 miles with the group, I thought I would die," Cockrell allowed. She thought, "there is no way I will do 20 miles next month."But it considered the group's leader, Rod Broadbelt, who at 78 is an experienced hiker, and said," I will not be out-stop bysomeone has 31 years older than me! "She shrugged a 20 -miler over three times since then. Because Cockrell has worked (as a member services coordinator of the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce), and there are some hiking trails in eastern Wake County, she rides mainly on weekends and visits to a gym to keep fit during the week. Here she focuses on weight training aerobics, and other muscles and endurance building exercises. And, she says, "I swim when I can.
