Bangor Legion state conventionHundreds of American Legion members representing 176 posts in Maine will come to Bangor this weekend for the 93rd annual convention at the Bangor Civic Center.
U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe will attend on Friday, and U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud on Saturday.
Activities will include American Legion resolutions; meetings; award presentations for firefighter, law officer, educator and Legionnaire of the Year; and check presentations to charities and programs such as Special Olympics of Maine, Dirigo Boys State, and camps for blind and visually impaired children.
The American Legion is the largest veterans service organization in the United States, said American Legion State Adjutant Lloyd Woods, a U.S. Navy veteran who served 1965-69. The group has 23,000 members in Maine.
The keynote speaker will be Maine’s adjutant general, Maj. Gen. John Libby. Officer elections will be held 8-10 a.m. Saturday, with installation of new officers in the evening. A dance for Legion and family members also will be held.
Bangor RegionThe Bangor Region Leadership Institute has given its prestigious G. Clifton Eames Award to the leader of an organization that helps women enter the work force and lead more productive lives.
Jane Searles, regional manager and microenterprise trainer for the Maine Centers for Women Work and Community, was honored at BRLI’s graduation dinner in May. The Eames award is given annually to a person who has been through the BRLI training and made a positive impact as a leader in the community.
Searles is a 2001 graduate of BRLI. She was honored not only for her work in helping women start successful businesses and careers, but also for an extensive resume of community involvement. Among the groups Searles has volunteered with are: the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Maine Women’s Fund board of directors, Noontime Kiwanis board, Penobscot Job Corps Community Relations Council, City of Bangor Economic Development Advisory Council, Spruce Run domestic violence project board, Tuesday Forum, University of Maine Women’s Resource Center Board and Children’s Miracle Network.
“It is clear from the list, that Jane’s passions encompass social and economic justice issues,” said Rebecca Hobbs, a local accountant and BRLI graduate who nominated Searles for the Eames honor.
The BRLI dinner concluded another successful year for the institute. Burglary
May 24 (12:19 p.m.) A 26-year-old Webster man was charged with Burglary of a Habitation-Forcible Entr. He broke into a home in the 5000 block of Abercreek. A neighbor heard glass breaking, saw the think getting into a vehicle and leaving the scene. He then called police and gave a description of the instrument. The vehicle he was riding in was stopped minutes after the call. He was taken into custody and treated at a local asylum for a hand laceration. The driver and a back seat passenger of the vehicle were released without charges.
May 25 Several motor means burglaries occurred overnight in the Forest Bend/Wedgewood Village area. An aftermarket air and a speaker box were stolen from an unlocked sports car and an SUV in the same driveway was rummaged through but nothing taken in the 15400 impediment of Wandering Trail. The driver's side door lock was punched on a truck and a cell phone burden was stolen in the 16200 block of Tibet. A GPS, cell phone, camera and wallet were stolen from an unlocked sedan in the 16600 design of Barcelona. Tools and prescription medication were stolen from truck, also parked in the 16600 lay out of Barcelona.
